The research“The teaching of the natural sciences and their technology in Brazilian schools – an overview of the period 2010 to 2020), launched in partnership with Fundação Carlos Chagas, analyzes scenarios and perspectives related to teacher training, methodologies and pedagogical practices in STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Brazil. 

This publication is part of the British Council’s STEM education programme, which aims to foster emancipatory scientific and technological education based on evidence. 

Objective: Present a systematized set of information to contribute to education professionals and researchers in the debate on education public policies and new propositions for the teaching of science in basic education

Presentation of results: The research presents a panoramic view of the teaching of science and its technologies in Brazil’s primary eduction, from 2010 to 2020, pointing to issues around teacher training and other concerns, such as methodologies and teaching practices, curriculum, literacy, scientific literacy and education inequalities (matters related to rights and inclusion). 

We hope the information and insights revealed by the research may be relevant to the strengthening and recognition of the strategic importance of science teaching and its technologies throughout the schooling process.
